ALTRINCHAM FC PLAYERS OF 1971-72

From the Gainsborough Trinity v Altrincham programme of 8 February 1972 and Wigan Athletic v Altrincham 30 October1971.:

  • MAILEY, Willie (goal):. In third season. Signed from Crewe Alexandra. Ex-Everton Youth team. Rated by many as one of the best keepers in the league. Former Scottish Schoolboy International.
  • COOKE, John (goal): Signed early this season as cover for Willie Mailey following seven seasons with Macclesfield. Ex-Port Vale.
  • HALLIWELL, Derek (defender): In his second spell with Altrincham after retiring following a serious injury. Now back to best form. As always, gives 100% effort; powerhouse of the side.
  • LUCAS, Peter (full-back): Signed 1971 summer from Bolton Wanderers. 21 years old.
  • MOBLEY, David (full-back): One of the club's younger players, now in his second season. Signed from Grimsby Town after playing with Sheffield Wednesday.Younger brother of Vic Mobley, the former England under-23 international.
  • GANNON, Mick (wing half): Now in his second season with the club. Signed 1970 summer. Ex-Crewe, Everton and Scunthorpe.
  • ASHWORTH, Barry (wing half): In second season with the club after signing from Chester. Started his professional career with Bangor Cityand moved on to Southend United.
  • TAYLOR, Brian (centre-half): The pillar of the Altrincham defence. In his fourth season with the club after eight years of Football League experience with Rochdale.
  • ROBERTS, Dave (wing half): Club captain. Signed midway through last season from Macclesfield Town after playing with Tranmere and Wigan Athletic.
  • MURPHY, Nick (wing half): 1971 summer signing. Ex-Manchester United and Reading. 22 years old.
  • WORTH, John (forward): High-scoring forward. Leading scorer in N.P.L. two seasons ago. In second spell with Robins after a spell with-Hyde United. One of the bravest players in the League.
  • BROADHEAD, Tony (inside forward): Signed last summer from Macclesfield. Ex-Oswestry and Bangor.
  • YOUNG, Dick (inside forward): Signed last summer from Southern League side, King's Lynn. A great wealth of football experience with Stockport, Grimsby, Bangor, Ellesmere Port and Macclesfield.
  • CORFIELD, Merrick (inside forward): Another 1971 summer signing from Macclesfield. Formerly with Oswestry Town.
  • FIDLER, Dennis (winger). Yet another summer signing from Macclesfield, after Football League experience with Manchester City, Halifax and Darlington.
  • RYAN, John (forward): Signed midway through last season from Notts County. Started his career with Liverpool and then professional with Tranmere and Wigan Moved on to Luton Town with manager Allan Brown for a four-figure fee. A very fast, tricky winger.
  • MASON, Keith (inside forward): Signing from Mossley being negotiated. Ex-Manchester City Youth team.
  • McLOUGHLIN, Tony (forward): Recently returned from America where he helped Dallas Tornadoes win the North American Championship. Leading goalscorer last season. Former Wigan Athletic player.
