GUISELEY (1) 1 ALTRINCHAM (0) 1

BSBN Match
played on Thursday, 11 April 2013, at 7.45pm

SUMMARY

Altrincham wasted a glorious chance to take all three points when Ryan Brooke's late spot kick was saved; it was Alty's eighth penalty miss of the season. Earlier, Alty had had the better of the first half but failed to score before Josh Wilson netted in the 37th minute. Already without the ill Clee from kick off, Alty lost both Watmore and Richman to injury before the second half started.

Guiseley had Holsgrove sent off midway through the second half before Jake Moult levelled with a well struck 78th minute shot following a Lawrie corner.

    REPORT

Altrincham kicked off down the marked slope at Nethermoor but it was Guiseley's Rothery who got in the first shot, a fierce effort, held by Coburn. Alty responded as a fine ball by Moult set Reeves free but the striker dragged his shot across goal from right of goal (2 mins).

Mat Wilson got away with a lecture after a bad challenge before Watmore got round Drench but was driven so far right of goal that he could not go on to score (5 mins). It was a lively opening from both sides as, next, Carole sliced wide after Rodgers had lost the ball.

Most of Guiseley's attacks were going up their right wing, where Holsgrove was deployed but, when the ex-Alty man got a chance, he fired wildly over. At the other end, Watmore won a corner, following which a wild lash over the bar came from the boot of Moult after the ball had been cleared to him (13 mins).

But Moult did better soon afterwards as a fine Watmore turn led to the ball falling to the midfielder whose firm shot hit the far post (15 mins). Alty were having the better of the game now as a Richman cross led to a Reeves header, which was saved.

Alty's dominance continued as an excellent Richman 30-yarder had to be tipped over by Drench. From the corner Havern headed over (20 mins). Next, a testing Densmore ball was just cut out ahead of Reeves. Guiseley then threatened, as Holsgrove forced a save.

Meynell now clattered Watmore and was booked for a challenge which effectively put the Alty man out of the game (26 mins). The robust approach continued as Rothery's boot caught Richman's face as he headed the ball. After lenghty treatment Richman resumed (30 mins).

Another two Alty freekicks for fouls soon followed but, from the latter, 25 yards out, Densmore hit his shot well over the bar. Richman, Lawrie and Watmore next combined to win a corner which Rodgers headed wide from Lawrie's kick (33 mins).

Though Alty were the better side, it was Guiseley's Josh Wilson who scored after the Yorkshiremen advanced up the right and referee Coy played a beneficial advantage for the Yorkshiremen. However, the goal had arrived decidedly against the run of play (37 mins).

After they had scored, Guiseley improved their performance. However, things got worse for Alty when Duncan Watmore had to go off, his replacement being Ryan Brooke (42 mins). In the three added minutes before half time another Meynell foul was commited after which Drench had to save well from Rodgers at the cost of a corner. Following this, the ball came to Rodgers who could not get his shot away before, first Moult and, then, Leather had shots blocked inside the box.

    Half-Time: GUISELEY 1 ALTRINCHAM 0

At the break Pat Lacey came on for Richman, who was still feeling the effects of the kick on his head which had injured his ey. So Alty had now used two subs and were a goal adrift as the second period started.

Soon, a fine run by Lawrie led to Brooke heading his cross wide (48 mins) but play was uneventful for the next few minutes.

Next, Brooke got in a good cross but there was no one in the box. For Guiseley, Carole shot just over the bar. Alty had a decent spell at this stage, before a foul on Densmore gave Altrincham a freekick just outside the box, and the offender Carole was lectured (58 mins).

After Densmore had been penalised, left of goal, Guiseley put a header over the bar from the freekick. But a game-changing incident now occurred as a Lacey tackle on Rea led to Holsgrove wadeing in and a skirmish developed. After consulting his linesman, Mr Coy showed Holsgrove a red card. After continuing to argue he finally walked off, as Alty's Havern was shown a yellow card for his role in the episode (64 mins).

Playing against ten men has been a fairly regular occurrence for Alty this season, with mixed outcomes. Initially, the game became disjointed as Brooke was booked for a foul and then Densmore escaped with a lecture for bringing down an opponent. Alty were not making their extra man count and had yet to test Drench in this half as they felt the absence of the guile of Clee, Watmore and Richman.

Now Guiseley brought on Walshaw for Rothery (75 mins) as Alty continued to misfire. But then a Densmore cross yielded a corner on the left. Lawrie's corner came out to Moult, beyond the back post, and his low drive found the net to make it 1-1 (78 mins).

Another Guiseley substitution saw McWilliams come on for Wilson (80 mins). The ten men made a late push for a winner and Ellis's long shot was only just over the bar (82 mins).

At the other end, a weak effort from Brooke preceded an Alty offside. Drench had a lucky escape as Reeves blocked his kicked clearance but the ball went safely out of play. Then, a Reeves cross from the right led to Lawrie being felled by Drench for a clear penalty. But, for the eighth time this season, Alty failed to convert a spotkick. This time the culprit was Brooke, whose shot was saved, to his right, by Drench (87 mins).

It was Guiseley who went closer to winning the game in added time, First, Lacey was booked for a professional foul (90+2 mins) before Guiseley won two successive corners. But a draw was probably a fair outcome in a game in which Alty had failed to capitalise on their first half dominance and on their penalty award. But they had more than matched the second-placed hosts and fully deserved their point.
